If you are like me and are looking for things to do between now and Spring Gobbler season here are a couple of ideas.
Bass fishing should start kicking it into high gear with most of the cold fronts out of the way and the New Moon nearing.(maybe even already happened by the time this prints) I think Snook season is in too, I could look it up but I’m not going so if you go, check www.fwc.com first just to be sure of the requirements.
Another fun activity is taking in MLB Spring Training games. However, many of you may be protesting Major League Baseball because of the apparent rampant steroid use. Especially with Alex Rodriguez confessing to using performance enhancing supplements for a three-year period. Rodriquez makes about 25 million a year playing third base for the New York Yankees, not to mention millions more in endorsements. It would take most of us 700 years or more to make that kind of money.
If you can get beyond cheaters making millions it is fun to go to the ball park in the afternoon or early evening and watch some baseball. Starting Feb. 25th you can go to Lakeland and watch the Atlanta Braves play the Detroit Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium. Tickets range from $8 to $30 and sometimes there are specials. You can call 866/66/TIGER for more information on Tiger tickets. The Braves play in Orlando, the Yankees in Tampa, the Red Sox in Ft. Meyers, the Rays in Charlotte County, the World Champion Phillies in Clearwater and many more. Go online and checkout the entire schedule www.springtrainingonline.com
Another great event coming up close by is the men’s basketball SEC tournament taking place in St. Petersburg. It takes place Thursday to Sunday March 12-15, 2009. You can get more information at www.secsports.com
Also there is one of the greatest sporting events in the state is the High School Final Four basketball tournament in Lakeland every year. The girl’s Final Four is Feb. 25-28th.This year’s the boys Final Four takes place Wed. March 4-7th.
So there are just a few ideas of how to fill your calendar, but if you’re like me you’ll be lucky to get to any of those. I’ve got big plans on Saturday’s like coaching J.T.’s t-ball games and watching Katherine win ribbons in horse shows.
Oh and I also have this thing called a job. And I have an anniversary coming up too. Well those were good ideas any way, maybe somebody can put them to good use. Have a great February and early March and get out and enjoy all Florida has to offer.
